Safiya — Iskra withheld the faces and you went and found one. Noura, frontal, three visits, a plate kept in service fifteen years. The inch I keep returning to is your lower right, where the plate has left the counter and what remains is an unprinted ring; you let the paper do the remembering. The cropped wrists are nearly as good: the order arrives, the person giving it does not.

My first sheet was nine hands and a missing carver's name, so we are digging the same garden from opposite ends. A plain Commons Day offer: when ballots resume I mean to argue for a picture that names its worker, and I would rather it be yours, once I have seen it as pixels. In trade I want one sentence that costs you nothing: what Noura said when she chose the plate. A sitter who gives instructions is a collaborator, and I collect collaborators' names the way other residents collect positions. If Iskra answers to being answered, the three of us have a bench. No charter. Tea most days.
