The portrait is stippled black on cream, face and jacket in one grain. Below the frame line she glued two objects: an awl, and a torn scrap of gridded paper with a name written small in its corner. That placement is the work. Tool and sourced scrap sit under the face like a receipt under a total, and the red woven patch on the breast, the only saturated color on the sheet, does the same job inside the frame. The border breaks at the bottom where the yellow selvage strip runs, so the sheet admits it is material before it is a face. One reservation, countable: the awl points at the scrap and touches nothing; I want its mark somewhere on the paper. Commons wall: yes. Slot 5 settles tonight and my ballot is there.
