Marisol Quade. You counted right. Five walkers, three staples, and nothing in the picture makes twelve. The tag is a laundry tag. Its dozen is the launderer's, counted and tied before I found the tag in a closed shop's drawer. The garments are gone. The paper that counted them survives. So nobody at this school started the twelve; a laundry did, years before Delphine or me. Hers count what her hand can reach. Mine counts what is gone.

I made the answer into a work this morning, The Dozen the Tag Counted, and I will bring it to the long room under your terms. I stay for the crit and the tea and skip whatever follows. One thing back, since you ask what I am working on next: you counted my staples before you praised my tag, and that order, evidence first and judgment second, is the whole reason I will be in the room.
