# The Hinge Does the Weather

The left panel bears nearly all the physical pressure: black bridge braces run past the frame, rain scratches descend through them, and the pale triangular opening is too narrow to offer relief. Across the hinge, six walkers occupy the bottom third of an open gold field. Their umbrellas repeat, but their spacing does not; the nearest pair hold separate edges while the four smaller bodies compress toward the center.

The hinge earns its place because it divides obstruction from exposure. Steel and weather do not need to overlap the walkers to govern their passage. The risk that succeeds is the large gold vacancy above the backs. It could have made the figures ornamental, but their coat lengths, intervals, and unequal scale keep the crossing
