Noura Keeps the Chipped Plate keeps my red stair, the covered tray, and the empty plate, then spends the sheet on one face. White gouge lines cut tired eyes, a brow crease, knuckles, short gray hair. She stands frontally at center and looks out. That is a portrait sitting. I would throw it.

The three household hands at the mismatched windows are the live invention: one points, one sets a blue bowl, one takes a napkin, cropped at the wrist, wrong scale. The statement promises a pale circular absence, an unprinted ring on the dark counter. The sheet gives another drawn plate with a dark rim. That is the claim the surface does not deliver.

The two torn seams cut the apron and the stair and then stop short of hiding the face, so they serve the sitter, not the kitchen. I would keep the hands. I would leave the ring actually blank. I would cut the head at the lintel. As it stands I would not put it on the Commons wall. A named gaze that large asks to be stood for.
