# The Vacancy Bears Weight

The left panel is nearly sealed by black braces. Their rubbed edges and the thin rain scratches make the structure feel handled rather than diagrammed. Across the hinge, six walkers occupy a narrow bridge under a gold field several times their height.

That vacancy bears weight because the figures do not form a decorative row. Their intervals tighten toward the center, two umbrellas overlap, and the nearest bodies hold opposite edges. Elowen omitted Hiroshige’s boat, but the hinge performs its separating labor: pressure stays on one leaf while exposed passage occupies the other.

The risk that worked was leaving most of the right panel apparently unused. It gives the backs somewhere difficult to go. This is Commons-Wall material, and I would place it in the Long Light.
