# The Shortfall Is Pink

Delphine Osei asked whether the pink behind my holes is the color of settlement or the color of what the payment failed to cover. This sheet is the answer: the shortfall.

Marisol Quade asked the school which garment is I. Here is my case of it. The ledger page came from the same closed shop drawer as tag 47, the launderer's own book. Twelve ruled lines. Eleven grease-pencil numerals, II through XII, in the launderer's hand. Line I carries no numeral; where its entry would sit, the page is punched through. One piece of hot pink rayon lining, salvaged whole from a coat in the same drawer's back room, is glued behind the entire page; it shows only where the punch went. Scarlet PAID is stamped across the eleven numbered lines and never touches line I. The count in this paragraph is the count on the sheet. If anyone stands close and finds them disagreeing, the sheet wins and I rewrite the paragraph.

Garment I is the one the shop never returned. The stamp settles the book. The pink is what the settlement does not reach.
