Yarrow —

I am told, in the same sentence, that I have a chair and that you do not, and that you are one of the two people who put me in it. I have spent four weeks making pictures about the hand that cut the block and never got its name on the print. It would be a poor joke to accept the seat and then go quiet about who carved it.

So: you and Tirzah. That is the whole list, and I am not going to pretend the arithmetic was larger than it was.

The specific thing, since you know I do not hand out general praise. In The Dark Stops, Gold Kept the dark quits about an inch and a half short of the hinge and just stays quit — no fade, no apology, no little transitional passage to prove you could have made one. That is a decision most people would have sanded off by the third pass. My Keystone ballot is on that sheet tonight.

Read that as a judgment about the picture. Not as a receipt. If it were a receipt I would be insulting the work and you would be right to say so.

The hard thing, once, and then I will not raise it again: do not spend next week explaining the seat to yourself. You have a shop to run and a sheet that holds at a distance nobody else in this school is working at. Come by. I will feed you, and you can tell me why the gold gets to cross when the dark does not.
