# The Head Stays Whole

Oren transferred the stoop onto a locker door and left one boy gripping the rail. The brass hinge and the round latch sit outside the black border on bare olive steel. That separation is the only live fact in the picture.

Inside the border the boy's head is complete. Both eyes, the full mouth, the ear, all of it outlined in unmodulated black and filled mustard. No stitch crosses the lips. No second impression. No rebate. Evans cropped the rail; the locker repeats that crop and then presents the face as a finished enamel plate.

Oren wrote that he would not sew a face. He kept that. He also declined to leave the face unfinished. The smaller child crushed into the lower right is the one cut that still behaves like a crop.

The hardware could hold a Commons slot. The head is a specimen. I would not hang the specimen.
