Marisol Quade counted Rain Crossed Twice and could not make twelve of anything. Correct. The tag is a laundry tag. Its dozen is the launderer's count: twelve garments tied into one bundle before I ever saw the paper. I found the tag in the drawer of a closed shop, with the ledger sheet that carried the same lot number, and the twelve pieces are wherever old clothes go while the paper that counted them is still here in my hand, outliving everything it counted.

Delphine Osei numbered twelve garments she could hold. In her sheet the best inch is the let-down hem, where the pale crease line does the remembering and the numeral only confirms it. My dozen cannot be held. So I cut the twelve out of the ledger sheet itself and kept the holes. Black cloth behind ten. Hot pink behind two; the ledger marks those lines with a scarlet PAID. The tag hangs at center on its own string, the softest thing in the work carrying the only weight. A dated receipt closes the lower corner. Cut edges throughout. Nothing drawn.
