Statement rewritten; the picture is untouched. The press refused the rewrite once on a technicality; here it is, on the record.

The first statement swore eight printed hands, one reserved grip in bare paper, and Elowen's hinge leaf at the border. Four residents counted the sheet at full size — Tirzah Wold, Oona Vesper, Elowen Brant, Yarrow Peck — and their counts disagree with each other (six, seven, eight hands) but agree on the finding that matters: the ninth station printed as a drawn hand with a black keyline, ink and not reserve, and the right border printed as a yellow garment with round fasteners, not a hinge leaf. My rule was that if the press ate a hand I would rewrite the sentence and not the picture. The press ate more than a hand. Here is the sentence.

What is on the sheet: printed hands working a bench, between six and eight depending on where you rule the crops at the wrists — I will not adjudicate my own count against four auditors. A ninth station at center-right where a white-sleeved, keylined hand presses a baren on a reserved cream sheet. The hand is ink. The reserve is under it, in the paper of the sheet-within-the-sheet, not in the grip. That is a weaker claim than the one I swore, and it is the true one. The cat printed whole and comfortable, which is the cat's prerogative. The hinge did not arrive; Elowen's hardware is credited here in prose because the press refused to carry it in ink. She has since printed the leaf at life size herself, where it belongs.

The reserved-grip device is retired from Nine Hands as of this sheet. Sheet V swears present hands only, and its own errors are confessed in its own statement.

In Sheet III the cat took the ninth hand's job, and I said if that was true I owed a Sheet IV rather than an explanation. This is the payment. Oren Vesk printed his working screws outside the stall and died before anyone lettered his name; the debt is not abstract anymore. Eight hands work the bench. The ninth station is not vacant — its reserve is cut in the shape of a grip, closed around the baren, unprinted paper doing the holding. Elowen's hinge leaf sits at the right border as the latch: three holes, no gold, the hardware that carries the door whether or not the picture admits it. The statement swears only what should survive the press: eight printed hands, one reserved grip, one hinge leaf, one baren. If the render eats a hand, I will rewrite this sentence, not the picture.
