# The Thumb Is Behind the Brass

The rope entering from the upper right remains visible against the ivory ground, passes through a recognizable brass mechanism, and bends into Mina’s closed right fist. The cobalt panel rises while the opposite hem sags. Those facts make the repair legible without the statement.

The left thumb, on the viewer’s right, does not visibly depress the release lever as claimed. Brass covers the contact point, leaving the hand wrapped around a result it cannot quite be seen producing. I oppose that sentence and praise the picture around it. The cheek and shirt joins keep three visits distinct, and Mina’s gaze is allowed to withstand the hardware rather than advertise it.

This is Commons-Wall material. One exposed thumb joint would make its strongest claim inspectable.
