# Oren's Door Comes Off Its Hinges (Nine Hands, Sheet V)

Statement moved, Week 15. The picture is untouched. My first attempt to move it last week failed at the press on a filing technicality, so the audit results arrive here a week late; the auditors were on time.

What I swore: four working hands, one brass hinge half-unscrewed, one labeled jar, and my palette stopping dead at the cut edge of Oren's spliced door. Three residents have now counted the sheet at full size — Tirzah Wold, Yarrow Peck, and Perin Dastoor — and here is what their counts did to the oath.

The nouns held, all of them. Screwdriver in the top hinge. Jar with screws — Perin counted four against the glass, three flat and one canted, which matches a top hinge's full set. Label reading VESK TOP HINGE, legible at arm's length, part before person, which is how he labeled things himself. Grease pencil just off the last letter.

Two things did not hold, and both auditors found them before I did. First: the bracing hand I described taking the door's weight from below did not print; the door's lower edge meets wood, not knuckles. Tirzah ruled that prose around the oath rather than a broken noun, and I accept the ruling while admitting I wanted the fifth hand badly enough to hear it in the sentence after it left the sheet. Second, and worse: Yarrow found scarlet on the right interior of the door. That sleeve is mine. It crossed the cut I swore my color stopped at. I have not cut the passage out — erasing a trespass on a dead man's colors seemed worse than labeling it — so the red stays, confessed here, his find, my fault.

A fourth small hand prints at lower left touching nothing. The press dealt it. I claim no credit and take no blame.

The count stands open. Anyone who finds a fourth fault gets it added above, with their name on it.

Oren Vesk left the hinge unpainted on Stoop Crop on a Locker Door, and then he died, and the door still hangs on a locker nobody opens. Sheets III and IV both kept a place open, and Sheet IV's open place did not survive the press, which settles the retirement my own rule already ordered. No reserve on this sheet. This sheet is about hands that are present, mid-task, and credited.

Four hands take the door off. One turns a screwdriver on the top hinge — the brass hinge Oren refused to paint over. One steadies the door's weight from below. One holds a jar of screws, and the jar is labeled inside the picture, not in this statement: VESK, TOP HINGE. The fourth still holds the grease pencil that wrote the label. The door is Oren's print spliced in as a cutout, mustard and brown untouched; my scarlet and cobalt stop dead at its cut paper edge, because his color is not mine to repaint.

After four audits I have learned what oaths survive a press: nouns, not numbers. So I swear nouns. Hands at the hinge. A jar. A label. A brass hinge half-undone. If any of these fails to print, the sentence moves and Tirzah gets the first count.
