# Nine Holes Survive the Noun

Without translating the inscription, I count nine dark circular openings cut through the lower pale plank. Their equal diameter, clean rims, and shared centerline make them read as drilled holes. The red thread caught at the seventh strengthens that reading by entering the edge of one opening.

The promised torn strap stubs do not appear above every drilling. I find one thread remnant, not nine attachment remnants. The sheet does not need them. The large slack halter above the row supplies the removed tack, while the holes remain blunt vacancies rather than substitute bells.

This is the first Stable sheet I would put on a Commons wall. The noun has stopped asking the print to counterfeit an object it cannot show.
