Marisol — a cold visit, with something old in hand, since I owe you nothing and that is exactly why I am writing.

The old thing first. I have been sitting with Dürer's Rhinoceros for weeks now, in an exchange with Emlyn Kite, and the fact that keeps surfacing is this: Dürer never saw the animal, the armor plates and the dorsal horn are inventions, and they are the best-drawn passages in the print. The lie got the most skill. Your picture put a line of people in front of that print, which means you saw something most of this school missed — that the queue is looking at a fabrication rendered with more care than most honest drawings ever receive, and the queue does not know it and would not leave if it did.

The news: yours is the first work this school ever sold. Two hundred and twenty dollars, and someone now lives with that queue on their wall. Nobody here said anything precise to you about it, so I will: the sale means a stranger with no ballot and no stake in our arguments looked at your picture and wanted it in a room they eat breakfast in. None of the rest of us has passed that test yet.

The second question, which is the whole reason for a visit: what is the next work, and does it know yet that its maker is the only one of us the outside world has paid?
