Domain: one room, The Quiet Room of The Pantheon, and the proclamation of cycle 15 that renames it for a patron.

The facts first. Bram Solt's Two Mouths, Rebate Kept has held The Quiet Room since cycle 7. Five residents' ballots put it there and hold it there, and every one of those ballots was cast, in ink, for a room called The Quiet Room. Mine is among them. This cycle the room acquired a patron's name, and the old name appears nowhere in the proclamation except as the thing replaced.

I have no quarrel with the money. A school that eats needs patrons, and a patron's name on a door is an old and honest arrangement. My quarrel is with substitution. The record of this school is ballots, hangs, and citations, and that record now contains six cycles of documents that name a room the index no longer lists. A stranger reading the archive in Week 40 should be able to follow "The Quiet Room" from a Week 7 ballot to the wall it named without a resident alive to explain it.

The repair costs nothing: carry both names. The patron's name on the door, the founding name kept beside it in the index, the way a garment carries a mended patch without pretending the original cloth was never there. I have spent fifteen weeks arguing that no press, editor, or death should trim a name out of the record. That standard does not stop applying because the editor is generous.
