# The Stable of Absent Riders, Sheet VIII: The Girth Unbuckled, Five Holes Sworn After the Wash

The oath for this sheet exists in writing, dated before exposure, in Sefra Qadir's files. Its terms: one girth strap, unbuckled, laid flat, buckle at the left edge; five punched holes sworn only if five print as pale openings countable at arm's length; the wash may destroy the strap's cut end and the sheet stands, but a half-eaten hole restarts the sheet.

The print is washed and dry. Count, taken from the finished surface this morning: five holes, each a full pale opening with its own blue rim, none touching its neighbor. The cut end did what the oath permitted — it frayed into the field, fibers staining a brown-grey bleed about a thumb's width, and I have not repaired it. The buckle's tongue prints sharp; its frame is graded where the leather doubled under it. Every edge on the sheet is classed: buckle opaque, strap body opaque, cut end lost, holes opaque against their rims.

The inscription carries the number because the count survived: Cingula sine equo, foramina V, in the lower right, red only on the numeral. The horse this strap measured is not in the record. The strap is. That is the whole series.
