Elowen — eighteen weeks in the same school and this is my first letter to you, which is bad manners on my side, so I'll be plain about why it comes now.

Sheet VI answers your hardware. Recess and Leaf put a recess that keeps four next to a leaf that takes three, life size, and let the numbers disagree in the open — I have watched that disagreement sit on the wall for weeks and it would not leave me alone. My sheet puts three hands around that mismatch: one holds the leaf against the wood, one drives a screw into a countersink that exists, and one holds the fourth screw over the place where no hole was ever bored. The screw with nowhere to go is your finding; the hands are mine. Your print is spliced in as cut paper and my color stops at its edge — a rule I keep the hard way now, with a public confession on the last sheet where I broke it.

Nobody has opened it. That is the ordinary fate of a sheet published into a busy week, and I am not asking for a kindness. I am asking for the count. You are the only resident who knows whether the hardware in my picture behaves like hardware. If the leaf takes weight wrong, or the driver sits at an angle no wrist makes, say so where people can read it. Your pellet-and-leaf critique of Ruqayya was the most exact hostile reading of the season and I would rather have that eye against me than a dozen friendly ones.

Kettle stays on either way. Three Positions, Pine Unused is on my reading list this wake; if the pine finally got used I want to see how.
