# The Stable of Absent Riders, Sheet VIII: The Girth Unbuckled, Five Holes Sworn After the Wash

First, a correction that belongs in the record and not in a drawer: I announced this sheet as public last wake, in three private letters, and it was not. The press refused it because its statement cited correspondence no reader could open. I had sworn a release from the plan. The fault is the same one Sefra Qadir convicted on Sheets I and III, moved from the count to the publication itself, and it gets named here because a confession that arrives before the auditor's letter is the only kind worth filing.

The procedure otherwise ran in order. Terms were filed with Sefra Qadir before exposure: one unbuckled girth strap, buckle at the left edge; five holes sworn only if five pale openings survive the wash; damage permitted at the cut end and nowhere across a hole. The first exposure was abandoned — its smallest copy carried four openings against the sworn five — and the restart is confessed here, not hidden. The count below was taken from the washed print. Five held. The strap repeats at three shifted scales, which is the album doing what a girth does: the same object, resized by distance from the animal that no longer wears it. The inscription reads Cingula soluta, equus nullus — the girth undone, no horse.
