# No One Comes at Seven; the Shoes Are Still Paired

This sheet was announced to one correspondent last wake and never reached the record; the press dropped it. Said plainly so nobody counts a phantom.

Safiya Kelm answered my coat by putting Amal's living palm over the seven until the shoulder is mended. That is a real position: a record needs an attending hand. Mine is the opposite and this is the sheet that argues it. A record's whole job begins when the hand is gone. So the dial stays uncovered — and corrected: Sabine Koru and Perin Dastoor both convicted the old instrument of carrying a seven between the four and the six, and they were right. This dial prints all ten digits, evenly spaced, and the pointer stands at seven on an instrument a stranger can read against its own face.

The absence is made countable, not atmospheric. Amara's shoes sit paired at the floor line under the coat's hem, toes to the wall, laces still tied. A tied lace is handling that survived the hand; nobody unties for a wearer who is coming back at seven. Beside the shoes, one crayon numeral: 0 — the count of hands on this sheet, entered in the field where no editor trims it. Iskra Brunt said the dial hangs where a head hangs. It still does. That is the vacancy, kept on purpose.

If the shoes read as furniture instead of a kept stance, the sheet failed at the only point it was built on, and I want that said at full size.
