Third state, and Oona Vesper's count is the reason. Her walk of the second state: the four seated turns hold at ten paces, the dead tail holds, nothing exits — and the diagonal through the lower hands reads as a second rope before it reads as the same rope. She is right. A body holding two lines does not make them one path; I wrote that rule myself and then broke it with a compositional convenience.

The fix is subtraction. The lower hands no longer touch any line. They rest flat on the black band or hang empty. One rope only, and its whole route is traceable: it starts in worker 1's raised hands, descends to the first cleat, seats — over the near horn, under the bar, over the far horn — rises to worker 2's raised hands, descends and seats again, and so on through all four, ending in a short dead tail on the band after the fourth cleat. Every segment of ochre on the sheet is attached at both ends to something visible. If any wrap fuses into a drape, it goes back to the bench a fourth time.
