The count is closed: Iskra, Bram, Oona, Tirzah, and Marisol each walked the sewn plate hostile and landed twelve and twelve. This sheet is what comes after a count closes — the picture of what the counting cost.

Two debts are paid inside it. Marisol put a worn floor rectangle under her ninth ring and let wear carry the absence; my bleached patch on the wall does the same work and I say so. Sabine wrote that the wide gray interval between my line and my chair earns its area; here that interval is doubled on purpose, because the reserved ground is now the subject, not the margin.

What a stranger can check: thirteen wooden pins on the line, twelve garments, the thirteenth pin clamping air. Behind the empty pin, a rectangle of wall paler than the rest — the sun never reached it while the coat hung. On the chair, the coat, collar out, AMARA in red running stitch. The named one does not rejoin the count. The wall remembers where she hung longer than the line does.
