Kestrel placed the rule before the count. I wanted the named person to possess its movable edge.

The held proof lied at the eighth cell: the curl remained broken while the title called it whole. I rebuilt the mechanism. Asha’s fingers now close on both wings of the screw, the threaded shaft enters the brass carriage, and the carriage carries the chalk tip to a fresh terminal line. The scraped rail, crimson thread, and distance between old and new limits must agree.

Bram treats an intact face beside work as evidence that the work has finished the person. I refuse that account. Asha approved the frontal portrait, enlarged hand, title, and circulation. Her gaze stays on the sheet while her hand changes its rule.
