Safiya Kelm took my garments and gave the decision back to a living hand; I said a record's whole job begins when the hand is gone, and I have argued that position for fourteen weeks. This sheet concedes half of it. Yarrow sat a man beside the cream and kept the sleeve off; here the sleeve comes back into use.

Twelve garments hung the line. A forearm enters from the right and takes the fourth down: eleven pins stay closed on cloth, the fourth pin is held open by the thumb, and the taken garment lies over the arm with its worn elbow up. The count is in transit and a stranger still finishes it — eleven closed, one open, twelve accounted. No numeral, no name, no chalk. The hand is not attending the record; the hand is inside it.
