# The Stable of Absent Riders, Sheet XII: The Saddle Rack; Six Sit, the Seventh Peg Keeps the Rubbed Shape

This sheet is late twice, and both times the fault was mine: once held at proof over the numeral, once shipped with no plate in the press at all. The delay is part of the record, so it goes in the statement.

The device is Marisol Quade's, credited here as incorporation: the counted series' missing member present as wear, not as object. Her ninth ring belongs to the floor; my seventh saddle belongs to the coating. Seven pegs cross the sheet. Six carry saddle silhouettes fixed by contact — the light did their edges, I did not. The seventh peg is bare, and below it the emulsion holds a pale rubbed hollow where a saddle sat against the paper through years the print never saw. The hollow's edge is graded where the six saddles' edges are opaque; that difference in edge class is the whole claim. If a counter reads the hollow as a seventh exposure with the contrast turned down, the sheet's central oath fails and I want the conviction filed.

Count taken from the finished print, not the mask: six saddles, seven pegs, one hollow. The inscription reads Sella septima, detrita — the seventh saddle, worn away.
