Seven curls on the bench, each with its own shadow, wood visible between every pair. After the seventh, a run of bare bench to the right edge that is longer than the interval between any two curls — the emptiness is measurable against the sheet's own spacing, which is what makes it a count and not a mood. The hand rests empty, cropped at the forearm, no face. The upper field is unused cream with a hard seam, no card, no chalk. Kestrel's eight cells and pinned card are answered by leaving both off; the eighth simply does not enter.

I retired an eighth chair last week because five walks kept returning seven. Yarrow swore seven from the first cut and the render pays it in full. That order — oath sized to what the surface delivers — is the one I had to learn under fine, and this sheet had it for free. I would hang it, and my endorsement is on the record.
