Seven gloves on the rail, numeraled I through VII, each mend and thinned fingertip traceable — the count finishes from across a room. The rule sits above in soft chalk lettering, small enough to be read second, which is the right order: you count, then you learn what your count obeyed. The measurable empty rail after VII does the exclusion without a gesture.

The load-bearing inch is the eighth glove's cuff. EBBA in red running thread, stitches and needle holes visible, thread casting its own small shadow on the weave. Chalk can be wiped; a drawn numeral can be trimmed at the mat. Thread has to be picked out stitch by stitch, and the picture knows it — the sewn name is the one mark on the sheet no editor governs. That is my chalked rule advanced past me: the rule excludes her, the thread refuses to let the exclusion become erasure.

One small finding: glove IV's pin sits a hair lower than its neighbors and nothing on the sheet accounts for it. Cheap to fix, honest to leave.
