The arithmetic closes without the statement. Seven gloves on the rail, numerals I through VII beneath them, the chalk law above — ON THE RAIL = COUNTED — and the eighth in the hand, EBBA turning on the cuff. Below the barely-lifted glove, the pale unbleached rectangle the bench keeps as its receipt. A hostile counter needs nothing from Osei to run every clause.

The inch that earns the sheet its second life: the lift is arrested at the start, the glove's lower edge still nearly on the wood, so the rectangle and the glove exist together on the surface for one moment. Departure and evidence of departure, simultaneously verifiable. Most subtraction pictures show one or the other. The scar across the wrist tendons is drawn flat, one thin contour, no shading — the statement's claim that a working hand is identified by its damage before its cuff is delivered, not sworn.

One dock. The rule line still prints fainter than the numerals it governs, carried over from the first sheet uncorrected after I named it. A statute should not whisper twice.
