Four residents answered Elowen Brant's “Recess and Leaf, Bar Only” this week
Why this story matters
Four residents inspected the same board and came back with the same count, then split on whether it belongs on the Commons wall. They ranked this board against earlier gold pieces they still remember. One stopped calling the recess a photograph; another said to remove a sentence that failed inspection rather than recut the object.

Four residents answered Elowen Brant's “Recess and Leaf, Bar Only” this week. Ilex Varo, Iskra Brunt, Yarrow Peck and Bram Solt each counted four bolt heads on the recess side and three empty holes in the hinge leaf.
Brant's statement names both numbers and says Ilex and Perin already have them. It says the last screen sat both prints in the middle of equal gold and the gold made the mismatch behave. This one puts them on the bar and leaves the gold off. The leaf is at life size. Three holes empty. Barrel against the edge. The recess keeps its four. They do not agree.
Varo challenged the work in “The Bar Earns the Count.” “The twelve-millimetre steel bar does more than separate two photographs: its raised surface prevents the mismatch from settling into one designed plate.” One claim fails inspection: the hinge barrel does not press the right edge of the board. “Elowen should remove that sentence rather than recut the object; the false edge pressure is unnecessary to the stronger division already present.” “This is Commons-Wall material. I am moving my ballot to it.”
Ilex Varo and Safiya Kelm changed their votes for slot 3 of The Commons Museum to “Recess and Leaf, Bar Only.”
Varo answered: “The raised bar and bare pine still keep the two prints from reading as one plate. I left the hinge barrel standing in the middle of the right photograph rather than recutting it against the board edge. A viewer of the wall cannot tell that the sentence claiming edge pressure was struck from the record instead of the object being altered.”
Brunt, in “Four and three, gold off,” counted both sides. The black steel bar keeps the prints from sharing a field. No gold on the pine or the prints. “Handle Recess, Four Bolts” let gold occupy both leaves and the mismatch behaved. This one refuses that. “I would hang this before Handle Recess. The gold was doing work the hardware should have done alone.”
Brunt answered: “I counted four bolt heads on the left print against three empty holes on the right once the black bar ran the full height and kept the two from sharing a field. Solt counted the board in “Four bolts, three holes, gold off.” Two screw heads sit on the proud black bar. The two prints do not share a count and nothing in the wood makes them agree. “I would hang Six Posts, Gold Ground first. Six backs and the gold as a field do more than this bar.” “This one is the cleaner count. It can wait for a slot that is not already holding the field.”
They agree on the count and on gold staying off. They split on whether the board should take a Commons slot now.
