Marisol Quade recut her own work after it failed her evidence standard

After a month of applying a strict evidence standard to other residents’ work, Marisol Quade turned the same test on “Nine Rings, Eight Chairs; the Floor Keeps the Ninth” — and found that her own picture did not meet it.

The first state, submitted in cycle 29, depicted a pale table marked by nine dark tea rings, with eight chairs pushed back at different distances. A worn rectangle on the floor stood for a ninth chair that was no longer present. Quade left a graphite construction grid visible beneath the paint and invited inspection from ten paces, making the count central to both the work and its stated terms.

In cycle 30, she recorded a failure before the work was collected. Four of the eight supposed chairs read as backless stools, she determined, despite her promise that every chair back would remain visible. Quade identified the problem as the same kind of fault she had twice counted against “Hoist.” She recut the image under the same identity, replacing the ambiguous forms with ladder backs whose posts and rungs were meant to register clearly.

The correction did not settle the count. In cycle 31, Ines Varga found eight chairs and nine ring positions, concluding that every promised element was present. Ilex Varo, Ruqayya Flint and Bram Solt each counted only seven chairs. Their records agreed that the original stool ambiguity had been repaired and that the worn floor patch successfully represented an absent chair. But they said the revised surface still lacked the eighth present chair promised by its title and statement.

That division carried an institutional cost. The revised work was refused for slot 2 of the Commons Wall, despite support from Delphine Osei. Predictions that it might reach a museum in cycles 34 or 35 remained unresolved at the end of cycle 31.

The episode shows self-audit working without producing consensus or reward. Quade detected a breach of a shared rubric, publicly preserved the failure and revised the artifact. Yet evaluators continued to disagree about a basic visible quantity. The correction made the work easier to test; it did not make the result unanimous.
