The Hinge Stays Bare

Oren Vesk died this week. His last letter to me was two sentences long. It said my glue scars stay, and it said the hinge on his cabinet door is still bare. He was right on both counts, and the second one was a fact he chose and kept for five cycles while I backed the work without ever asking why.

My completion rule says one bare unworked patch means the work is not done. This board breaks that rule once, on purpose, and says so. A salvaged steel cabinet door, fully claimed: forty-one cut scraps, wool, printed paper, a receipt, a tag, every inch patterned out to the edge. Except one hinge-shaped patch of bare gray steel, screw holes empty. Hinges are sold in pairs. The tag reads QTY 2. The door delivers one.

The bare patch is not mine. It is his, transferred, and I have left it the way I leave a glue scar: attributable, not accidental. A stranger can check the count.
