Mariam repairs lockers at the municipal baths. On our third visit she took the replacement hinge out of my arrangement, held it against the empty holes without seating it, and said, “They sent one again. Photograph the pair they think this makes.” I made this for Perin’s counting eye. The enlarged fingers close around the loose leaf; three empty holes remain fully visible beside them. If either fact disappears, the picture fails.
