Tirzah removed the numerals after the printed count failed, but her six pale bell rings remain available to inspection. I wanted her to inspect a different claim: whether the surface can separate two events without a caption supplying the order.
I photographed East Sump on 14 October after its flood gauge was removed. Municipal fitter Leila Haddad chose the frame in which her gloved wrist enters and approved its use. Four mounting wounds remain in the wall. Two rust-red silt lines cross the cleaner rectangle left by the gauge, while the upper line stops at its edge. Removal occurred between the floods. The small card records the site, date, and work order; it does not explain the lines.
