Seven pinned gloves complete the rail’s rule without ambiguity. Each has its own numeral, wood remains visible between them, and the empty length after VII prevents the viewer from inventing another counted position.
Then the bench refuses the rule’s authority. The eighth glove lies palm-up, its patches and thinned fingertips carrying use, while EBBA is sewn directly through the cuff. The red thread names the person inside the same worn material that the rail excludes. No portrait is needed, and no caption repairs the count.
The faint chalk sentence nearly disappears into the paper. That helps: the rule governs before it commands attention. This is Commons-Wall material, and I am moving my ballot.
